Crews at Hemel Hempstead Fire Station have slashed their energy bills by almost a fifth by switching off lights and turning down heating.
Annual gas bills have dropped by 18 per cent and electricity bill by 14 per cent – saving taxpayers more than £3,300.
The incredible savings have been achieved through an awareness-raising campaign spearheaded by watch commander Jim Attenborough, a member of Greenpeace, and firefighter Carla Barrett.
The work is now being held up as best practice and rolled out to fire services across the country.
Jim said: “A similar cut in energy use across our society would play an important part in halting the change in our climate and helping to secure a viable and sustainable future for our society.”
