Motorists in Dacorum will be able to pay for parking with their mobile phones under a shake-up.

Council bosses plan to sign up with a company that enables drivers to pay with their phones for car parks – though there will be a surcharge.

Councillor Julie Laws, cabinet member for environmental services at Dacorum Borough Council, said: “It makes life easier for users of the car parks than having to have coins in their pocket.

“It’s in addition to the services we have at the moment – you will still be able to use coins in the machine.”

Under the system drivers can register with the company RingGo to pay for car parks in Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted and Tring, but you pay an extra 20p for the privilege.

“If you make the experience easier people are more likely to use Hemel Hempstead to shop and use the facilities,” said Mrs Laws.

The price of parking in the borough is due to be reviewed in October 2013.
