Call for streetlight to be turned on after damage to cars

A driver whose car was targeted in overnight attacks is calling for the streetlight outside his home to be left on during darkness.

Nicholas Ellis says his neighbours have also been victims of thugs who damage parked vehicles in Springfield Road, Hemel Hempstead, under the cover of darkness.

“I’m sure things would improve greatly if the lights were left on,” said the 63-year-old.

In July his car was egged and later in the summer a motorist hit it and drove off. Mr Ellis said: “The man next door has had his car vandalised so many times with wing mirrors being kicked off. The lady across the road has had her car damaged and scratched.”

Many streetlights are now switched off between midnight and 6.30am under cost-cutting by Herts County Council.

Council spokesman Jonathan Morrell said: “The council is planning to do a full review of the part-night lighting changes in 2013 once a full annual cycle has taken place because only then will there be meaningful data from across the whole county to inform the review.”
