Herts businesses are being urged to give money off discounts to retired and serving armed forces personnel in the county.

It’s part of a campaign called Proud to Support Hertfordshire Heroes, run by Community Covenant with backing from more than 25 major county organisations, including councils and the police.

Now the private sector-lead Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has put its weight behind the scheme.

LEP chairman John Gourd sent an open letter to businesses in Hertfordshire encouraging the private sector to get behind the scheme and “help those who have helped us”. Mr Gourd suggests support could be given by companies offering discounts on goods or services, promoting jobs and training opportunities and helping publicise the Community Covenant.

Mr Gourd said: “This scheme has not been set up as an act of charity but as a small measure of thanks to our armed forces for their continued service to the country. I hope that the talented people working in the county will help us create opportunities for those who serve or have served in the armed forces.”

Chris Hayward, who chairs Community Covenant said: “I’m pleased that a business led organisation such as the LEP has put its weight behind this campaign. It’s important that we give something back to our armed forces who have given so much for us.”

To join the Proud to Support Hertfordshire Heroes scheme and get window stickers to display, send details of your offer to the military to Hertfordshire.Heroes@hertfordshire.gov.uk
