The first batch of treats for our troops on the frontline have been sent out to those in Afghanistan and the Falkland Islands.

Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning, who launched his annual appeal for donations earlier this month, has sent out 190 parcels.

He said: “The response to the Treats for our Troops campaign has been wonderful. This is just the first batch – we have enough to send another batch in the next week.

“I know that these parcels are really appreciated and I am pleased to say that, all things being equal, they will arrive in plenty of time for Christmas. It is a great comfort to our servicemen and women to know that people back home are thinking of them and have gone to the trouble to put together a personal gift.”

He thanked the Hemel Hempstead Lions who helped with the packing of parcels and ensuring they were properly wrapped for their long journey.

Mr Penning added: “The response this year has been tremendous and I again thank the people of Dacorum for their support.”

Businesses are also being urged to get behind retired and serving armed forces personnel by offering them money off discounts.

It’s part of a campaign called Proud to Support Hertfordshire Heroes, run by Community Covenant.
