Politicians say they have filled in ‘another piece of the jigsaw’ of switching Berkhamsted’s education system from three- to two-tier.

They agreed to create designs for the enlargement of Potten End First School and St Mary’s First School in Northchurch to make them primary schools from September 2014.

Herts County Council needs planning permission from the borough council if the work, expected to create 78 new reception places in the area, is to go ahead.

More than 80 per cent of people backed the reform of Berkhamsted’s schools in a February consultation.

Frances Button, county council cabinet member for education and skills, said: “The decision was another piece of the jigsaw to transform the education system in Berkhamsted.”
