The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for snow across the region.

It is an update to the amber warning - which urges people to be prepared - issued on Sunday evening by the weather experts.

The latest warning states: “A band of snow will become slow moving over the area through today (Monday), fragmenting and dying out from the north through this evening and overnight. Accumulations of five to 10cm look likely to occur in many areas.

“The public should be prepared for the risk of disruption, particularly to travel.”

It is expected that by midnight the worst will be over.

There are three levels to the Met Office’s weather warning system - yellow for be aware, amber for be prepared and red for take action.

Meanwhile, drivers have faced long tailbacks on the slopes of Galley Hill and Warners End Road in Hemel Hempstead.

They faced slippery surfaces, having to take extra care – but meanwhile, children with sledges were out in their droves enjoying the snowy conditions.

Dacorum Borough Council tweeted in the late afternoon: “Due to today’s snow, we haven’t been able to collect all bins due for collection.”

More than 20 roads were affected in Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted.

Meanwhile, Herts police has issued tips to drivers to prevent them from losing control of their car in the snowy conditions.

Motorists are urged to drive at a slow speed in as high a gear as possible, accelerating and braking very gently.

They are also encouraged to drive slowly on bends where loss of control is more likely and to check grip on the road surface when there is snow or ice by choosing a safe place to brake gently.

In addition, drivers are advised to ensure they have sufficient fuel for their journey and that their screen wash is topped up.
