Record sales are being celebrated by the team at Berkhamsted’s Rex cinema after people began queuing for tickets to this month’s programme at 7.30am on the day they went on sale.

Since then 31 of the 47 February movie showings at the landmark picture house have sold out.

There are no pre-order tickets left for any of the five showings of Quartet or 10 showings of Les Miserables planned this month.

Rex spokesman Jane Clucas said: “I think we had the biggest queue we have ever had on Saturday, January 26. People were queuing from 7.30am and the queue went on all day.

“The queue came from the High Street, up Three Close Lane, into the cinema and inside the auditorium.”

She puts the success of February sales down to the forthcoming BAFTA film awards on Sunday and the Oscars two weeks from now.

The popularity of films like Les Miserables, filmed partly in the Ashridge Estate with Berkhamsted mum-of-two Eve Stewart as its production designer, has also helped.

Jane said: “People wait to see them at The Rex, as it is a different setting. You are not cramped in and pushed out, like in the multiplexes.”

The cinema will show 1950s rom-com Some Like It Hot at 2pm on Valentines Day and modern rom-com Silver Linings Playbook at 7.30pm.

But Jane said Rex chief executive James Hannaway, who gives a short speech before every film shown there, will not base his remarks on romance that day. She said: “That would send everyone running.”
