Solar panels to be fitted at sheltered housing schemes

SOLAR panels are to be installed at seven sheltered housing schemes across Dacorum.

The panels will be fitted at schemes in Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted and Tring to cut electricity bills.

The seven schemes are: Holly Tree Court in Adeyfield; Cranford in Highfield; William Crook House in Warners End; Oaklawn in Tring; Lagley House in Berkhamsted; Compass Point in Northchurch and Dudley House in Bovingdon.

The move, announced at a full meeting of Dacorum Borough Council, comes after plans to install around 5,000 solar panels on council homes were thrown into doubt by government changes to the subsidy scheme.

Last May the council predicted the panels could produce up to £470,000 of free electricity.

But the work has had to be rethought following a drop in potential income from selling power back to the grid.
