Shorter Friday school hours plan – but not for teachers

A school has launched a consultation on plans to cut its teaching hours on a Friday to allow extra time for training.

Cavendish School’s headteacher Sue Forde is proposing to end the school day at 2.10pm for pupils but they will be able to stay for homework clubs, one-to-one mentoring or revision help.

While the day for some students will be shorter, teachers will be staying in the classroom for an extra 45 minutes – finishing at 4pm. During this time the focus will be on professional development. Mrs Forde said: “It is everything to do with improving learning and teaching within the school.

“Our aim is to make Cavendish an outstanding school. We want to make Cavendish the first choice school in Hemel.”

The time will be taken away from non-examination learning for life subject PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education).

Topics will instead be taught during form time and focus days. The shorter day is already being embraced at Longdean and Kings Langley schools.
