Herts Shelter closure will ‘hit most vulnerable hardest’

A countywide housing advice service run by a national charity has been earmarked for closure because of budget cuts.

Now Councillor Ron Tindall is pressing Herts County Council to explain what the alternatives will be if the Shelter service is forced to shut down.

The Liberal Democrat councillor said: “I am particularly concerned about the fact that, at a time when we are approaching a benefit cliff, the one organisation that targets housing is closing down. More and more people will soon be seeking advice and help.

“Obviously there are many things to do at the moment, but we have to look after people who are less fortunate.”

Shelter has been helping people with housing and homelessness problems since 1976.

The charity’s chief executive Campbell Robb said: “Sadly we taken the difficult decision to propose the closure of 10 of our services. This will be a massive blow to people in these areas.”

Free advice is still available through Shelter’s helpline and website. Call 0808 800 4444 or visit www.shelter.org.uk.
