For centuries the Thames was a handy dumping ground, either deliberate or accidental, for the capital’s unwanted items, but modern techniques have allowed some of the iconic objects from British prehistory to be rescued from the riverbed.

You can find out all about the Battersea shield, the Waterloo Bridge helmet and the Kew tankard and how they were discovered at a Berkhamsted Local History & Museum Society talk on Monday night.

The speaker is Jon Cotton, formerly curator of prehistory at the Museum of London, and he will be warming to his subject in the music room at Berkhamsted School from 7.45pm. Tickets are £1 for members and £3 for visitors.
