An allotment site in Tring has free plots for the first time in six years, according to Tring Town Council.
After a growing-your-own boom in previous years ensured every available pitch was cultivated, there are now four whole plots and seven half plots available at the site on Duckmore Lane compared with the waiting list of previous years.
Town clerk Michael Curry said the recent wintry weather may be to blame, along with lack of media coverage.
He said: “Gardening programmes aren’t quite as prominent now. We’ve also had some hard cold weather, but it’s been quite dry.
“I think it’s a combination of less publicity about growing your own and the current economic situation. But there may be an increase in demand again if people realise that with a little bit of effort they can have a relatively cheap source of food in a time when prices are rising.”
A typical plot measures approximately 25 square metres, and costs £40 a year. A concessionary rate of £35 per year is available to those aged over 60, or who have a Dacorum Card.
Anyone interested in applying for a plot can call Tring Town Council on 01442 823347.
