‘Fatbergs’ are cause of couple’s hell home

A couple are being driven to their wits’ end by a nasty sewage leak in their back garden which has lasted for months.

The pair, who live on Shrubhill Road, Hemel Hempstead, say they dread coming home at the end of the day because of the foul smell and bogginess outside their home.

The woman, who does not wish to be identified, said: “I have cried over this problem. I am so stressed out about it, we are desperate for it to be fixed.

“I am at the point where I don’t know what to do, it is affecting our whole life.”

Their home has been subject to the flooding intermittently since June last year, but Thames Water say the problem is caused by a combination of wet wipes and fat entering the drainage system.

The company’s Craig Rance said: “A build-up of wet wipes and fat blocked sewer pipes in Shrubhill Road causing sewage to back up into gardens. When fat and wipes are put into the sewers, they harden to form hideous fatbergs. These clog pipes and cause sewer flooding which is utterly vile.”

Thames Water say they have cleaned the sewer and will continue CCTV inspections to rectify the problems.
