It’s ta-ta to three tier, so let’s have a party!

An open-air concert will be held later this month to celebrate the switch-over of Berkhamsted’s schools from three- to two-tier education.

The End Of An Era celebration will be held at Bridgewater Middle School in Bridle Way, Berkhamsted, from 6pm to 10pm on Saturday, May 18.

Headteacher Rachel Swaffield said: “We have got a lovely big sloped bank that’s like a natural amphitheatre, so everybody will get a decent view.”

The event will showcase young talent ranging from indie rock bands Parka Club and Comrade Cycle to Bridgewater School’s own choir and orchestra.

The concert will be headlined by the Memphis Blues Brothers Band, acclaimed for their performance at London’s Proms In The Park last year.

Past and present pupils from all of Berkhamsted’s schools are invited to attend End Of An Era, which is expected to draw in between 2,000 and 3,000 people.

Mrs Swaffield said: “This is schools getting together to celebrate the end of the three-tier system and the change to two-tier in Berkhamsted.”

The town now educates children in first schools for those aged three to nine, middle schools for ages nine to 13 and upper schools for those aged 13 and over.

But from September, it will begin the transformation to the two-tier primary and secondary system which is used in much of the rest of the UK.

The change will make it easier for schools to win government funding and help resolve the shortage of reception school places in Berkhamsted.

The End Of An Era concert is also open to the public. Tickets cost £10 for adults and £5 for children aged five to 17. Children under five get in free.

There will be a bouncy castle, face painting, a raffle, food from town pub The Kings Arms and more during the event.

Tickets can be bought from schools in the area or the town’s Berkhamsted Sports, Ciente Salon, The Kings Arms, Traveltime World or Claire Lloyd Properties.
