‘Visit our village and give the shop a boost’

The people behind a community shop are marketing their home as a visitor destination in a bid to boost business.

Wilstone householders stepped in to save their store after Liz and Ron Faulkner decided they wanted to take a step back from the business.

The pair had taken over the shop after the closure of the Post Office in 2008.

In 2012, a committee was formed and shortly afterwards the Wilstone Community Shop was born.

As well as inviting outsiders to the village the committee – made up of around 20 volunteers – is also reminding locals that if they do not use the shop it will not survive.

Committee member James Brown said: “It is there for you, if you don’t use it, it will disappear.”

The shop offers more than 400 convenience items, newspapers, locally sourced produce and hot pies, rolls and drinks.

James said: “Not surprisingly, like all retail enterprises, footfall is the key to success and whilst the shop has its has its local customers from the village and neighbouring villages it also wants to draw customers from further afield.

“There are many reasons why you may wish to visit Wilstone such as the Half Moon pub that dates back to the 17th century or perhaps a visit to PE Mead and Sons Farm Shop and Tea Rooms.”

There are also walking, fishing and bird watching opportunities around the reservoir and canal.

“It’s a very friendly village – it’s a real community but we also like outsiders,” said James, who has been volunteering in the shop since being made redundant last year.

The shop is open from 7.30am to 1pm Monday to Saturdya and 9am to midday on Sundays. www.wilstonevillageshop.org.uk
