The school council of Pixies Hill School in Long Chaulden, welcomed the mayor of Dacorum, Bert Chapman, to the school to inaugurate and open officially their new Pixies garden, which they want to become home to a wide variety of local wildlife.
The garden has been reclaimed from a disused area and landscaped thanks to funds raised by the school’s PTA – the Parents of Pixies.
The children will now decide which plants and vegetation to grow to support and attract birds, butterflies, bees and other local fauna.
The garden is already off to a flying start. The bird nesting box – which was planned to contain a camera so that activities inside could be seen in school – has already got its first tenant. A family of blue tits took early possession of the property and is now in residence, so, for the time being the camera will have to wait.
Meanwhile in the school quad a mother duck has hatched 14 ducklings and the children are busy ensuring that her large family grows up safely.
The Mayor was applauded loudly when he went into the school hall and congratulated the whole school on their efforts, telling them how lovely the garden was looking.
“One of the best things about being the Mayor of Dacorum,” he told the children, “is meeting people. It’s been a real pleasure to come here today, to see you all and open this exciting new addition to your school.”
