A Northchurch man will appear on BBC One prime-time talent contest The Voice tonight.

Ricardo Afonso, 38, will battle in a sing-off against Mitchel Emms, 19, from Stafford, during the 7pm episode, which has already been filmed.

Ricardo said: “It ill be great to see how the performance went, because on the day with all the excitement you are aware of what you are doing, but sometimes the energy gets the better of you.”

Danny O’Donoghue, lead singer in Irish band The Script, was mentor to Ricardo and Mitchel. He will decide which of them goes through to the next stage of the competition during tonight’s show.

Ricardo moved to the UK from Portugal in 2005 after dubbing Hollywood films into Portuguese for many years. He performed as the lead character Galileo Figaro in West End hit We Will Rock You for four years, but now hopes to make a living out of writing and singing his own songs.
