Flats plan prompts heritage concerns

Planning committee members are concerned that plans to redevelop a town centre hotel into flats will strip the town of a much-needed amenity without regard to its historic importance.

Tring town councillors decided to reject an application to convert the Rose and Crown hotel into a restaurant and 36 flats in a bid to keep hotel facilities in the town – but Dacorum Borough Council is the planning authority.

At the planning meeting on Monday, local history expert Tim Amsden was anxious to persuade members to oppose the application and told them he was looking into whether the building could be listed.

He said: “The Rose and Crown is of immense historical importance as there has been a hotel on the site since the 16th century.”
