GARDENERS overcame freezing conditions to submit a bumper crop into the vegetable category at Little Gaddesden’s Winter Show.
The annual event, held on Saturday, received more entries than usual into the class, which was won by David Moore.
Cookery and photography were also plentiful inside the Village Hall. Jill Hancock won by strides in the cookery class, taking home the Kathleen Talbot Rose Bowl and Martin Bray bagged the Daphne Brooks Cup for his photography.
Head nurse at Hemel Hempstead’s Barton Lodge Veterinary Centre, Vicci Hawes, judged the pet classes, which attracted four dogs and three guinea pigs.
The best in show was Poppy, a dog owned by Cameron Magson.
Standards were high in the marmalade, jam and pickles categories and the Floral Art interpretations were amazing. Barbara Sheard won the Duncan Cup for Best Exhibit.
Jo Fernandes, who works with the Hospice of St Francis, presented the cups and prizes. There was a special entry in the floral art category to raise cash for the Berkhamsted-based charity.
The children’s classes were down in numbers but not in effort. All the youngsters had worked very hard to produce really great models and cakes, making it very difficult for judges to decide on winners.
The cup winners were Antony Fletcher, Rozzy Lane, Fiona Stinton and Timmy Turner.
Show secretary Glenda Cooper, who is stepping down after organising the annual show for the last 15 years, said: “Well done to all those who took part. And a big thank you to all who came along in the afternoon. I think everyone enjoyed a cup of tea and a piece of cake.”
