A town mayor says his council’s refusal to fund a charity’s Bank Holiday Monday fete will cause him embarrassment when he has to open it.
The Berkhamsted Lions had applied to Berkhamsted Town Council for £1,000 to pay for extra toilets at its annual August fair - but it was turned down.
The decision was made at an April meeting of its finance and policy committee.
But Councillor Ian Reay, who has since become Berkhamsted mayor, said on Monday: “I am embarrassed that I have got to open their fete in August.
“Can we offer an opportunity for them to reconsider their application?”
Lions spokesman Emma Pearce had previously argued that this year the Berkhamsted Cricket Club fete will be open for longer as well as having food and drink stalls for the first time.
She said facilities for the disabled and mothers and babies would have to be provided as the fete is a family event.
But a member of the public had spoken against the application at the April meeting, saying the cash should be provided by the new stallholders instead.
At the committee’s latest meeting on Monday, councillors said that perhaps the charity could apply for funding for something else instead. Councillor Carol Green said council decisions cannot be reversed within six months.
