A hotel that was named by a proud father celebrating his son’s success in bobsleigh at the 1964 Winter Olympics could be demolished to make way for a new 100-bedroom venue.
The firm behind Bovingdon’s Bobsleigh Hotel – Macdonald Hotels and Resorts – has submitted a planning application to Dacorum Borough Council, which seeks permission to knock down the current hotel and build a bigger one in its place complete with a function suite and spa.
If given the go ahead it is not clear whether the Hempstead Road hotel would lose its distinctive name, although a spokesman for the firm said: “I would doubt it very much. It is purely a planning application it may not get approval.”
He added that the company has many hotels and submits lots of planning applications.
The hotel was renamed by past owner Anthony Nash in celebration of his son Tony being part of the gold medal winning British two man bobsleigh team at the Winter Olympics in Austria.
