What better way to celebrate your 100th birthday than by doing some press-ups?

It is keeping fit that has helped Ken Dickson live for a full century, after all.

The Little Gaddesden man was a Royal Artillery gunnery captain and served throughout the Second World War. He has keeping fit at Berkhamsted Sportspace for the last 14 years and attends its pilates classes twice a week.

He said: “My father lived to be 104 years old, so I have good genes. But the secret is to look after those genes. I look after them physically by doing pilates twice a week, mentally by teaching chess and spiritually by attending the church at Little Gaddesden.”

A service of celebration was held for him at the church, St Peter and St Paul, on Sunday. Villagers then shared food and drink in his honour at Little Gaddesden Village Hall.
