An outreach steering group in Tring celebrated its 100th meeting with an open event at the town’s Corpus Christi Church Hall.

The Justice & Peace Group is affiliated to the Churches Together in Tring and is dedicated to supporting those in need, both at home and overseas.

The meeting was a chance to showcase past projects and achievements – including maintaining the town’s Fairtrade status – and among the guests were town mayor Roxanne Ransley and Canon Vincent Berry, the parish priest for the town’s Catholic Corpus Christi Church.

The event – in Langdon Street – also promoted the group’s current project, which is helping to build a school in a poor area of Uganda.

Councillor Ransley presented a cheque for £2,000 to the school’s representative, Mary Owen, along with new toys and books.

A special mention was given to pupils from Bishop Wood Junior School in Frogmore Street, Tring, after they raised £50 towards the cause by holding a cake sale as well as donating toys and books.

The schoolchildren also wrote a letter to their African counterparts, which the group hopes will be the start of a long-standing friendship.
