The boss of Tring restaurant The Akeman has congratulated his staff after the eatery was awarded its first SRA star by the Sustainable Restaurant Association.
Oakman Inns chief executive Peter Borg-Neal said: “I am so proud of our team at The Akeman. It was the first restaurant we opened of our eight-strong group, and they have been at the heart of creating many of our policies on sustainability.
“It’s fantastic to see these efforts recognised and rewarded in a way that means so much to our teams and customers.”
Using the three pillars of sustainability - sourcing, society and environment - the restaurant was judged on 14 different categories including engagement, treating people fairly and healthy eating.
The rating recognises eateries as sustainability champions depending on how they fare after rigorous testing in all categories.
The Akeman scored top marks with 100 per cent in the ‘treating people fairly’ category, due to the variety of staff training courses plus employee benefits.
Healthy eating was another full marks triumph for the restaurant, due to its healthier cooking methods, gluten-free menu, children’s menu and the extensive vegetarian options available.
The grass-fed lamb and beef, free-range poultry and eggs and the Fairtrade tea and coffee also contributed to The Akeman’s efforts towards sustainability.
