Record number of votes for youth elections

A BUMPER number of young people had their say with a record number of votes being cast in this year’s Herts Youth Parliament election.

For the third year running, the number of voters aged 11 to 18 grew, with 27,000 using an online ballot on the county’s youth website www.channelmogo.org

A total of 33 budding politicians hit the campaign trail to be elected as Members of the UK Youth Parliament (MYP).

The election results were announced on Saturday at County Hall in Hertford.

Chairman of the council Jane Pitman congratulated the six newly elected young people and their deputies.

The six new MYPs are Ailish Brown, 16, from Berkhamsted, Xavier Cohen, 16, from Tring, April Cremins, 16, from Watford, Alex Hunt, 16, from Letchworth, Armaan Bhatti, 16, from Watford and Michael Pitman, 17, also from Watford.

Their deputies are Elliott Smith, 16, from Watford, Ijeoma Amaechi, 15, from Bushey, Laura Soares, 15, from St Albans, Megan Jackson, 15, from Hemel Hempstead, Tinashe Nyamukapa, 17, from Hemel Hempstead, and Rory Tinker, 15, from Hemel Hempstead.
