Increasing numbers of people are turning to Dacorum’s Foodbank team for help when they face a crisis – and the charity has just received a welcome windfall to help balance the books.

The Foodbank project is overseen by Dacorum homelessness charity DENS, and more than 2,500 people were helped by the system in the year 2012/13.

Food worth more than £100,000 was donated by local schools, faith and community groups and individuals.

Now Councillor Ron Tindall, who represents Hemel Hempstead St Paul’s on Herts County Council, and colleague Councillor Ian Reay (Berkhamsted) have allocated £300 and £500 respectively from their locality budget to DENS.

They said: “Because of the present financial situation across the country the Foodbank provides a necessary service for families caught in a crisis.”

Each county councillor has a £10,000 budget to spend on worthwhile community projects in their area.
