With exactly a year to go until the official centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, a heritage project is gearing up to mark the solemn occasion.
The Herts at War scheme has already launched pilot tours of battlefield sites including Ypres, where the infamous battle of Passchendaele was fought, but now has plans to roll these out to ordinary people across the county. Volunteer organisers also plan to erect the first memorial dedicated to the Hertfordshire Regiment on foreign soil, and yesterday, the 99-year anniversary of the conflict, the project’s educational website was launched.
