YOUNGSTERS donned their finest Roman tunics for a day of learning about how the great empiric invaders lived their lives.
They played games from the period, learned Latin and made their very own Roman mosaic.
The event for pupils in Year 3 of St Mary’s C of E First School in New Road, Northchurch, was part of their history lessons.
Their teacher Jenny Avis said: “A group of Roman soldiers came to visit them at the school.
“The children had the chance to handle a variety of artefacts, dress up as Celts and Roman Legionnaires.
“The most exciting part of the day was a weapons demonstration on the field where the children saw a javelin, bow and arrow and sling shot in use.
“This was a brilliant day that brought history to life.”
The school was visited by education company Legion XIV during the event at the end of last month.
In other news, just before half term Year 4 youngsters from the school collected £133 for a children’s charity by selling Victorian sponge cakes.
The fundraiser was part of the Great British Barnardo’s Bake Off.
A typical Victoria sponge consists of raspberry jam and whipped double cream or vanilla cream sandwiched between two sponge cakes.
