The vet who tended to a dog that died after a hit-an-run incident outside her surgery has told of the moment the collision happened.

Katy Mackenzie, who works at the Risedale Road branch of Medivets in Hemel Hempstead, gave emergency treatment to golden Labrador Ted after he was struck by a car on Thursday evening.

Katy, who was inside the practice on with nurse Rachael Leonard, said: “We heard a vehicle go past, which sounded like a car or a motorbike travelling at speed, and then we heard a scream.”

They thought at first that the car had hit someone, but when they rushed out they found Ted lying in the road.

They administered emergency treatment before transferring him to their Watford branch for specialist help, but he had to be put to sleep on Sunday.

Katy said: “We really hoped he would get better. My heart sank when I found out that it wasn’t the case.

“It’s such a shocking thing. His owners obviously loved him so much.”

Anyone with information about the incident, which happened at 6.10pm, should call the police on 101 and quote log number 578 of August 22.
