‘Just like Top Gear in your own back garden’

Neighbours living near an airfield strip say noise from screeching cars is like listening to an episode of Top Gear in their back gardens.

Brad Gunn, who heads up the newly formed Bovingdon Action Group, said people living nearby have to go inside when motorsports are in action.

The group is opposing an application to permit ongoing motor vehicle activities on land at Runways Farm on the airfield, which is already used for teenage driving lessons, super car experience days and other driving activities.

Mr Gunn said: “You sit in your back garden and it is like listening to Top Gear but you can’t turn down the volume.

“It looks like great fun but it shouldn’t be this close to a residential area.

“It is quite offensive – it’s noise pollution.”

The residents’ group – formed by people living in Hempstead Road – is also opposed to the latest proposal to demolish the Bobsleigh Hotel and build a bigger venue.

Mr Gunn said: “The Bobsleigh needs to be redeveloped but the proposal is massive.

“It was turned down by the council [in 2009] because it was massive and it is still too large and inappropriate.”

The organisation, which has called on the rest of the village to join their fight, has also mounted a campaign against a proposed traveller site near the hotel and has sent leaflets to homes urging householders to oppose the plan.

It was discussed at Bovingdon’s Parish Council meeting on Monday evening.
