Police believe they have identified the teenage firebugs who set alight a Tring Athletic clubhouse.

The three youths, aged 15 and 16 – who cannot be identified for legal reasons – have been interviewed after an extensive investigation by the Berkhamsted and Tring Safer Neighbourhood Team.

Tring Athletic FC’s Miswell Lane base was set ablaze in July – and police immediately began interviewing young people and those who were in the area at the time.

Sgt Peter Huffer, who oversees the police team covering Berkhamsted and Tring, said: “We will take any such offence very seriously.

“What can often start with people playing with fire can get out of hand and be very dangerous.

“That’s why extensive enquiries were carried out by the neighbourhood team.

“We are satisfied that we have identified three offenders and are waiting for them to be dealt with by the judicial process.”

The two 15-year-old boys and one 16-year-old girl, all from Tring, have now been reported for arson.

Tring Athletic chairman Mick Eldridge said: “I think anyone who damages public property should be made to pay for it.”

But he said taxpayers will probably end up paying for repairs to the building, which is owned by Dacorum Borough Council.

Herts Police spokesman Olivia said the matter has been referred to the youth offending team, but that nobody has yet been arrested or charged.

The wooden Miswell Lane base had been home to two changing rooms, showers, a referee’s room, kitchen, bar, toilets and clubhouse that could hold up to 100 people.

The base was used by Tring Athletic’s A and B teams and ladies teams as well as other community groups and members of the public, but it is now uninhabitable.

The football teams will instead use Tring Athletic’s main base in Cow Lane to change and play football.

The club spent £100,000 improving and extending the Miswell Lane clubhouse in the 1990s.
