Politicians said the architect the former Rose & Crown Hotel would ‘turn in his grave’ to see it now being converted into flats.
The developer asked Tring Town Council what the name of a new street running through the development of 35 homes for people aged 55 and over should be.
One suggestion was Huckvale Place - named after William Huckvale, the architect behind the historic High Street property.
But councillor Barry Batchelor said: “The last person who would want his name stuck on that is Huckvale, because he would be turning in his grave.
“It is a great loss. We have done our best and to preserve the heritage of that part of the town, it should be Rose & Crown Place.”
