A young man has been charged with burglary, shoplifting and assault after police were called to Berkhamsted’s Tesco store on Wednesday evening.
Police rushed to the High Street store after reports of shoplifting but before officers got to the scene it is alleged that two supermarket staff were assaulted. Officers arrested a man on suspicion of theft and assault but following further investigation while he was in police custody Lewis Bentley, of Upper Icknield Way, Aston Clinton, was also arrested for burglary.
The 21 year old has now been charged with theft, two assaults and two burglaries - the break-ins relate to houseboats on the Grand Union Canal.
Mr Bentley has been remanded in custody and will appear before magistrates today.
Chief Insp Glen Channer said: “We are working hard to make Berkhamsted even safer and will not tolerate criminality. I would encourage members of the public to report any suspicious behaviour via the Herts Police non-emergency number 101 or if a crime is in progress call 999.”
