A young man has been banned from entering Tesco in Berkhamsted while on bail after being accused of burglary, shoplifting and assault.

Police rushed to the High Street supermarket last Wednesday after reports of shoplifting but before officers got to the scene it is alleged that two store staff were assaulted.

A man was arrested on suspicion of theft and assault but following further investigation while he was in police custody Lewis Bentley, of Edlyn Close, Berkhamsted, was also arrested for burglary.

The 21 year old appeared before magistrates on Friday charged with theft, two assaults and two burglaries - the break-ins relate to houseboats on the Grand Union Canal.

In court he was granted bail on the condition that he does not enter the Tesco store and stays away from the towpath in Berkhamsted.

Mr Bentley is due back at St Albans Magistrates Court on Friday, September 20, when he is expected to enter his plea to the charges before him.

Chief Insp Glen Challner said: “We are working hard to make Berkhamsted even safer and will not tolerate criminality. I would encourage members of the public to report any suspicious behaviour via the Herts Police non-emergency number 101 or if a crime is in progress call 999.”
