The driver of a car that hit a tree fled the smash and left his passenger semi-conscious with a suspected broken leg in the early hours of this morning.

The man still in the car had to be cut free by firefighters after they were called to the smash in Tibbs Hill Road, Abbots Langley, just after 2.40am.

It took them until just after 3.10am to release him from a silver Rover 25, which had crashed near the Love Lane cul-de-sac. The man in his 20s was then taken to Watford General hospital, arriving at 3.30am.

East of England Ambulance Service spokesman Richard Dunne said: “His injuries are serious, but not life threatening.”

Mr Dunne said that paramedics suspected the man had a broken leg.

Police spokesman Olivia Finucane said when police and ambulance services arrived just after 2.30am, the man was ‘semi-conscious’.

She said: “It looks like the driver has made off from the scene and there was a passenger left who was injured.”
