Tring street party plans for third Sunday of every month

A street will be closed to all through traffic between 2pm and 4pm on the third Sun-day of every month, so that everybody who lives there can have a party.

The parties in Longfield Road, Tring, begin on Sunday and will run through until at least February.

They are part of a street play project that is being piloted in just two streets in Herts.

They follow on from the success of street parties enjoyed by citizens marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee last year and the Royal Wedding the year before.

The idea was met with mixed views at a recent meeting of Tring Town Council.

Councillor Nigel Nutkin said: “I hope it is a return to meeting your neighbours for some sort of social activity.”

But other councillors said it could discourage County Hall from investing in proper recreation grounds – and encourage children to play in roads.

But Councillor Nick Hollinghurst said the idea came from the people of Longfield Road themselves, and that there have only been three objections.

He said: “Personally I think it is an experiment that deserves to be supported and we should see how it works.”
