A young heart surgery patient from Berkhamsted presented a cheque with her family for more than £2,000 to a specialist cardiac hospital in London.
Four-year-old Olivia Furmston underwent open-heart surgery at London’s Royal Brompton Hospital back in April, and has since made a full recovery.
Her mum Suzanne, dad Neill and big sister Daisy found the help and support of The Brompton Fountain – a charity which supports the families of sick children being treated at the hospital – invaluable while Olivia was undergoing treatment, and wanted to give something back.
The family worked hard to raise funds for the charity by selling raffle tickets for a draw held at St Thomas More School in Greenway, Berkhamsted, back in July.
Top prizes included an Xbox 360 console, a Willows Farm annual family pass and a Kindle Fire tablet among others.
The total amount raised through ticket sales and generous donations stood at £2,105.50, and the family were pleased to present the cheque to The Brompton Foundation’s director Trudy Nickels during the summer holidays.
Olivia’s mum Suzanne said: “We would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their support – local businesses for their generous prize donations, the local community for buying tickets and donating, and head teachers at St Thomas More School and Greenway School.”
The charity plans to use the money to fit out the new Echo Room on the hospital’s Rose Ward. The room will have interesting lighting, wall decorations and a TV and DVD player among other equipment to keep the children occupied while they are receiving treatment.
