Bankers take on charity challenge - again

TWO friends are in training for the 30th annual Berkhamsted Half Marathon – and both took part in the inaugural run three decades ago.

Tony Marsh, 51, of Kings Road, and Barry Smith, 50, of Winston Gardens, both in Berkhamsted, will be raising sponsorship money for The Hospice of St Francis in Northchurch.

Tony said: “Back then I didn’t live in the area but my friend Barry did and he had said there was a very big hill along the route, which you had to run up twice.

“It was steep and difficult then, so goodness knows what that will be like 30 years on and carrying a little more weight along than last time.”

“I don’t run regularly but Barry does so I know he will be a lot fitter than I will be – but it’s all a good challenge and for an excellent local cause, which we are keen to support.”

The race sets off from Berkhamsted Cricket Club at 10am on Sunday, March 4, followed by a five-mile fun run at 10.30am.

Tony and Barry met while studying a banking and finance course and are both now bankers working in the City of London. Sponsor the pair at www.justgiving.com/aliasSmithandMarsh
