Innovative new mobile data equipment could soon be fitted in Dacorum’s entire police fleet after a successful trial across Herts.

The Toughpad in-vehicle devices enable officers to input information from the scenes of incidents, and early teething problems with connectivity are now being ironed out using network provider tests.

Chief Insp Damien Kennedy said: ““Over the past few weeks we have been focusing our efforts on ensuring we have the very best connectivity across the county for the Toughpad in-vehicle devices. This is to ensure that officers have uninterrupted access to the intelligence data and other force systems that they need whilst out on patrol and enabling them to input information from the scene of incidents. In turn, this will reduce the occasions when officers need to return to the police station, increasing police visibility to the public.

“To that end, we have recently undertaken extensive countywide testing with a number of the leading network providers before changing our current data providers which, combined with procuring the latest in aerial technology for our vehicles, and upgrading our in car wi-fi routers to a 4G standard, will ensure much improved connectivity.

“Our objective is to ensure that our entire fleet is fitted with these devices across the county, including in Dacorum, before the end of this financial year.”
