Nature lovers will have the chance to join reserve warden Owain Hegarty and his team on a guided walk around the College Lake on Saturday.

Visitors can see lake’s various wildfowl and other creatures up close, including wetland birds such as teal and wigeon which use the marshlands for feeding and roosting during the winter. Owain and the team will share their knowledge and answer any questions.

Those interested in joining the tour between 10.30am and 12.30pm should call 01442 826774 to book a place.

Also on the day, families can have a go at making Christmas decorations at the Festive Fireside session between 11am and 3pm. Those taking part are encouraged to bring and share their own materials, or to spend time foraging on the site for pine cones, leaves and branches to make seasonal wreaths and decorations.

The site’s visitors’ centre will welcome Sarah Onacko of Luton-based binocular and telescope makers Opticron.

Between 10am and 3pm, Sarah will hold a demonstration of several different binocular models – some of which will be discounted on the day. A percentage of all sales will go to the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust.

Eleven hides around the lake’s perimeter are the perfect spots for birders wanting to catch a glimpse of the wildlife which calls it home.

The former chalk quarry is now one of the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust’s flagship nature reserves, and during summertime is home to rare bird species such as lapwing and redshank.

The visitors’ centre on the thriving site in Bulbourne, near Tring, first opened in 2010 and since then more than 1,000 different species have been recorded there.
