A weekly online tracker of A&E waiting times for the whole of England shows that Watford General Hospital fell short of the national target for seeing patients within four hours.

Under government guidelines 95 per cent of patients should be seen – but at Watford during the week running from November 25 to December 1, a total of 93.7 per cent of patients were seen within the time frame.

But the trust is not alone – another 77 also missed the target in that week.

Ambulances queuing outside the hospital for 30 minutes or more – the target is to transfer the care of the patient to the hospital in under 15 minutes – rose by 17 to 51. The national average was 31.

The figures, published by the BBC as part of it data about winter pressures on A&E, show the number of people going to Watford’s A&E is up by 44 to 1,659 compared to the previous week and those admitted for further treatment has also increased.

The trust said that since the end of October it has seen a significant increase in the number of people at A&E, rising by more than 12 per cent in just four weeks.

A spokesman said: “Importantly we have seen a sharp rise on specific days – Monday and Tuesday – and at certain times, such as early evenings.”

On top of this more people with multiple and complex conditions – in particular older people, who are often more vulnerable during the winter months – have been seeking help.

While the trust did not achieve the 95 per cent target for the week ending December 1, it did meet it during the previous three weeks.
