Highway chiefs are on the hunt for school crossing patrol volunteers after parents voiced their concern over a dangerous junction.
Herts County Council says it is now ‘actively looking’ for volunteers to undertake school crossing patrol duties outside Ashlyns School in Berkhamsted on a temporary basis.
It’s also considering ‘larger, more permanent solutions’ to solve the issue where Kingshill Avenue, Chesham Road and Shooterway meet, which is busier than ever since the school took on 400 extra pupils in September following the move from an upper school to a secondary.
Berkhamsted Youth Town Council recently put pressure on highways chiefs to extend the 30mph speed limit on Chesham Road, and the council says it is liaising with community groups about improving road safety.
But this may not be enough action for parents who criticised the junction in September, saying a crossing should be installed.
Herts County Council spokesman Andrew Dawson said this would be unlikely to happen.
“Some signage and lining improvements have already been made, but it’s unlikely that we will be looking to install a crossing. We’ll continue to monitor the situation.”
In the meantime, if you’d like to volunteer to make the journey to school safer for children then you can email school.crossingpatrols@hertfordshire.gov.uk or call 0300 123 4047 for more.
