Berkhamsted town centre bakery Greggs will close its doors in mid-March, this website can reveal.

The outlet – part of a national chain that sells doughnuts, Cornish pasties and other food products – has occupied a central spot in the High Street for 20 years.

It is just a few doors down from Berkhamsted Town Hall and across the street from Berkhamsted Civic Centre.

There are two Greggs bakeries in Hemel Hempstead town centre – but the company plans to keep both of them open.

A Greggs spokesman said: “Our priority for the next two to three years is to improve the quality of and reshape our existing estate, through a combination of shop relocations, reformatting and some shop closures.

“We can confirm that our Berkhamsted shop is one of said shop closures but would like to reassure you that the shop team will be redeployed locally, and advise that you will still be able to buy your favourite Greggs products at the nearby Chesham or Hemel Hempstead shops.”

He said the only reason the Berkhamsted store is closing is because its lease was up for renewal.

Twitter-user and Greggs fan Jeremy Lee said he was ‘genuinely gutted’ by the news.
