Brownie groups in parts of Hemel Hempstead are at risk of closure due to dwindling numbers – but meetings in Berkhamsted are booming and need more volunteer leaders.
Girlguiding is the leading charity for girls and young women in the UK but 3rd Apsley End, 1st Hemel Hempstead and 2nd Hemel Hempstead Brownies along with Grovehill Guides are at risk of closure.
Susan Reynolds, who is in charge of recruiting new members, said: “In Berkhamsted we are chock-a-block and we could do with more brownie packs, but in Hemel Hempstead they are really short of numbers and it’s the same with guides.”
She hopes that by attracting new group leaders that will in turn bring in more young girls.
“Being a brownie opens up a world of exciting new challenges and the opportunity to make new friends,” she said. “We do lots of different activities. They go on holidays, trips out, complete badges. They can try lots of different activities.”
Youngsters can become part of the brownies, which is celebrating its 100th birthday this year, from the age of six while guides caters for those aged from 10 to 14 years old.
In Hemel Hempstead, 3rd Apsley End meets at Tudor School, 1st Hemel Hempstead Brownies meets at St Mary’s Church Hall in Old Town and 2nd Hemel Hempstead Brownies gathers at St Paul’s Church in Solway, Highfield. 1st Grovehill Guides meets at the Hemel Hempstead Guide headquarters in Queensway.
