Rennie Grove Hospice Care is looking for between six and 10 volunteers to fill new children’s bereavement support roles across the catchment area.

Those chosen will go on to be trained in working with the children’s support facilitator to provide pre- and post-bereavement counselling to children and young people under 18.

Key tasks will include talking to parents either face-to-face or on the telephone to discuss their child’s needs, before giving child-centred support using different creative activities and play, where appropriate.

Children’s support facilitator Karen Neill said: “This could include making memory boxes, or using puppets, arts and crafts as an alternative way to express thoughts and feelings.

“The young clients these volunteers will be supporting will have a parent, sibling or close relative who is either seriously ill or who has died.

“They’ll be helping to empower the parents or main carer to support the child – and where appropriate, provide one-to-one support for the child or young person either at home or at school.”

In order to be considered for the volunteer roles, previous experience of working with children outside of your immediate family is essential.
