Almost 1,000 signatures were collected on a petition calling for a village car park to remain unrestricted.

Kings Langley Parish Council took up the gauntlet after householders from in and around Langley Hill - the site of the car park - got in touch.

Under a borough-wide review of car parking, Dacorum Borough Council has proposed to introduce a four hour limit at the car park in a bid to free up spaces for shoppers.

But residents are worried it will force village workers to park outside homes in Langley Hill and in nearby side streets.

Councillor Bob McLean said: “The other worry was that people would use The Nap, which is still an all day car park, and block that up, which then causes problems for the doctors surgery.”

The borough council came up with the time restriction as a response to fears that the car park was clogged up with workers, but a survey by the parish council’s warden proved otherwise.

“Our warden did a series of visits to the car park at different times of the day to analyse if it was full,” said Mr McLean.

“In the main there was space for shoppers to visit and park so we don’t feel their reasoning was correct.”

He said around 50 per cent of people who use the car park are village workers and added that most shoppers pay short visits and like to park in the High Street if possible.

The petition containing 943 signatures was formally received by the borough’s full council on Wednesday evening.

A decision on the parking review will be made by borough council portfolio holder Councillor Julie Laws.
