THE Rising Sun is now the official pub of the year.
The Berkhamsted watering hole, which sits beside the Grand Union Canal, was given the title by the Mid Chilterns branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).
It also won the group’s 2012 Cider Pub of the year and its landlord Mark Granger was given the two awards on Friday – which was also his birthday.
A beer and cider festival was held at his pub, off George Street, from Friday to Sunday.
Camra chairman Dave Badminton said: “It was a very good and busy event on a lovely day. We went there in the afternoon and stayed until about 10pm. There were at least 15 beers there and the same number of ciders, some of them dark and some light.”
The pub’s usual beer list included three Tring Brewery ales and the cider list had several from Millwhites in Bourne End.
The pub was put on the front cover of CAMRA’s UK-wide Good Beer Guide 2012 last year.
The pub also gives 20p off drinks for CAMRA members – sign up or learn more at www.camra.org.uk
