JOHN Waller has been a volunteer guide at Boarstall Tower for nine years and wants everyone to celebrate its 700th anniversary this year.
The medieval moated building was built by John de Haudlo to protect Boarstall House, Bucks.
The village behind it was demolished by the Royalists during the English Civil War in 1645, so the Roundheads could not use it for cover.
In 1778, Boarstall House was demolished by Sir John Aubrey, MP for Buckinghamshire, and his first wife – after they blamed it for the death of their only son, aged six. Now only the Tower remains.
John, 69, of Cobb Road, Berkhamsted, said: “The history of this place is just unbelievable.
“You can feel it. Not many people get to be part of a building that’s 700 years old and feel part of it.”
