SCOUT leader Richard Hirons was among of a team of 10 to complete the London Marathon to rake in cash for youngsters.

The explorer scout leader from Leverstock Green helped raise £20,000 for scouting which will make it possible for more children to join local groups.

Richard, 39, formed part of a team of scout leaders from across the UK who took on the feat to get fit and raise cash.

He completed the 26.1 mile course in 4:34 and raised £2,000 for local scouting.

Richard said: “I have always wanted to run the marathon and when the opportunity arose to run for the scouts it was the ideal time. Having been involved in scouting as a leader for 15 years and lost a great friend and fellow volunteer Dave Barnes to cancer suddenly last year, it was the perfect time to run in his memory.

“100 per cent of the money raised will go back into the movement, and help negate the current lack of entertainment, physical activity and all round adventure which is available to young people in many areas.

“In doing so we can make thousands of people more engaged with society and with the community as a whole.”
